The QoTD reminded me that I have actually read some adult books in recent weeks in between Potter-fixes.
First up was Brideshead Revisted by Evelyn Waugh. It is the first of his novels I've ever read and so stunningly rich in
Full of vibrant and amusing characters, on the surface it tells the story of the decline of the English aristocracy between the world wars but underneath it is about so much more: friendship, religion, love, purpose...
It's definitely one I'll be reading again as it's impossible to take it all in.
I'm currently working my way through the 1980s TV series which was made with the sort of indulgence that TV production companies can now only dream of (11 episodes for one slim book!).
A film version of the book is due out next year.
I've also returned to a favourite author of mine, Kate Atkinson. Just love her lively writing style which always has the element of the surreal to it. She creates the most amazing characters each of which has their own element of eccentricity.
Human Croquet is about two children abandoned by their parents and brought up by an indifferent aunt.
Obsessed with the return of their mother, their father's reappearance several years later with a new wife does nothing to stifle their curiousity about her whereabouts and their longing for the life they had with her.
Atkinson manages to expertly blend humour and tradegy with just a little bit of the extraordinary.
