This story on bbc.co.uk today is symbolic of how we are turning into a nanny state. The National Consumer Council visited the main supermarket chains to test how much they were promoting healthy food. It found that more fatty, sugary foods were featured in promotions than fruit and veg and accuses the supermarkets of 'pushing unhealthy food'. The NCC says supermarkets should be doing more to encourage people to eat healthily. Fare enough but where does self control come into it?
Most supermarket chains have already been shamed into removing sweets from the check out area so as not to tempt children and adults. But cream cakes and chocolate aren't heroin. Surely a better tactic would be to ensure that people are adequately educated in what are healthy, everyday foods and what are occasional treats so they can make informed decisions rather than 'hiding' the naughty stuff in the back of the cupboard.
