I wasn't going to. Really had little interest other than mild curiosity but a ticket became available for this morning at the IMAX with Adam et al. So I thought well, if I'm going to see it, it has to be on a huuuuuge screen and in 3D.
Views from people I know who've seen it seem to be polarised between 'Great' and 'Awful in 3D'
Will post my views here later...
...and here they are:
The film is as predictably as it is beautiful. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would but that is down to the world that James Cameron has so imaginatively and intricately created rather than the story line which pinches plenty from existing stories is so linear the only surprise is that there are no surprises.
The characters are almost all perfect stereotypes except for the female leads which are refreshingly ballsy and great role models.
I don't know whether it was because I was sat quite low down at the IMAX, looking up at the screen but I didn't get any of the ooooh-aaaah sensations from the 3D that I have when I've seen films with 3D elements before, in fact I don't think it would have lessened the experience much to have seen it in 2D.
It didn't feel like a long film which is a good sign but I enjoyed the first two thirds more. Once it heads in the inevitable end of film battle it just got a little too cheesy to the point that I wanted to laugh. And I'm never that engaged by big battles anyway.
So overall, I'm really glad I saw it but I don't think I'm fussed about seeing it again, although saying that I'd love to see a making of.
And I think the awards nods its garnering are more to do with technical achievement and box office success rather than it being an overall great film. It begs the question as to what exactly are the awards are recognising? How can you compare a film like Avatar with say An Education or Precious which are all competing Oscar Best Film category ?
